Years ago, events would have played out differently.

In the wake of the crash, Perceptor would have been elbows-deep in coding; while the others scouted a safe location, he would have been assessing their systems and security protocols, scanning logs and combing the wreckage for some hint of what had gone wrong. The Decepticon's attack had slipped past their defenses without so much as a blip - it was too perfect. The mystery would have plagued him for days, dominating his thoughts even with the Swarm bearing down on them...

But that time had passed.

Study had been set aside in favour of ballistics, verbose enthusiasm traded for stoicism. Curiosity had been replaced by the will to survive. The question of 'how' was still there, albeit relegated to some far corner of his mind. So long as they were stranded on a dead homeworld, Swarm closing in on their energy signatures, method and mysteries weren't important.

With the others busying themselves securing their likely temporary hiding spot, Perceptor had taken it upon himself to move to the upper levels. The range of his scope had them beat no matter how they sliced it. While they could argue the motivations behind his reformatting, they couldn't argue with the results - if anything so much as twitched, it would have a bullet between the optics before it could process the idea of being a threat.

He settled himself against one of the blackened walls, rifle resting against his thighs as he glanced out at the broken terrain. It wasn't the Cybertron he remembered - but then, he wasn't the 'bot who'd been there to remember it. Not anymore, anyway.

Nothing made sense. It wasn't for lack of trying on Orion's part, but there were just too many missing facts, too many pieces of the puzzle gone for him to put them back together.

He remembered Cybertron. He remembered the vast halls of the archives and quiet hours of research. He remembered long conversations with a gladiator and their shared dreams of equality. Dreams of a world better than their's, free from corruption. It hadn't been perfect, but it was the only life he'd known.

He looked down at his hands, shuttering his optics. Even his own body was different than he remembered, marred with the scars of battles he didn't fight. If Megatronus hadn't been there, where would he have ended up? A prisoner in a war he'd never known? Offline?

It was a lot to take in.

Megatronus had been welcoming despite the apparent time that had passed, offering him both sanctuary and some small shred of familiarity in this nightmare. It wasn't much, but if he had to be facing this, he couldn't think of a better mech to have at his back.

He wished he could say the same for his crew, however. The heat of their optics made his spark clench; it was hard to ignore the sense that he was missing something important while under their scrutiny, yet another crucial memory robbed from his processor. He'd stayed on the bridge long enough to be polite, but retreated soon afterward.

Surely, in time, the world would start to make sense again. Together with his most trusted friend, he could make some difference now and try to set to right some of the damage that their enemies had caused.
